My name is Betty and I want to talk about quitting smoking.
Recently I visited my Aunt in a nursing home. As I looked around at all the people that end up in places like that, I wondered how many were there because they made the wrong choices in life. Like the diabetic who ignores the advice to control their diet or the smoker who with every cigarette, makes the decision not to quit smoking. We're a society with short attention spans. We live in the moment not thinking about the consequences of the decisions we make.
I am not a smoker, but my life has been affected dramatically by loved ones who made daily decisions not to quit smoking. Both my father and father-in-law died of lung cancer. I had an uncle who lay in a hospital bed suffering with emphysema before he died, yet he made the decision not to quit smoking, even as he lay in that hospital bed. I am very thankful that my husband decided to stop smoking several years ago. We are all affected one way or another by bad decisions, whether it's us making the decision or the people around us.
Just yesterday, as I was doing errands in the city, I talked to a woman who had been trying to quit smoking for ten years. What's stopping her? I don't know, because there are a lot of different ways out there. There are gums, patches, pills and hypnosis to name a few, but I've never known anyone who was successful using those methods. The EasyQuit System is an e-book that teaches you how to quit smoking very quickly. It uses a therapy called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT.
Now, I know what you're thinking. "She doesn't know what I'm going through and how hard it is to stop smoking." No, I don't. But I do know how I felt when my husband smoked and I had to deal with the smell, the cost and the worry about his health. I do know how I felt when my uncle died and I watched his wife and children grieving. And I do know how I felt when my father-in-law and my own father passed away because of their decisions to not quit smoking. There's the loss of all the years they could have had to live with their loved ones if not for the choices they made.
The bottom line is, there are consequences for our choices. Wrong choices result in poor health and good choices result in better health.
